Why does the Windows update not work with HTTP Proxy on?

You probably have enabled proxy authentication.
Go to Proxy > HTTP > Authentication and add the following domains to Domains without authentication:

.windowsupdate.com
.microsoft.com
.windows.com

Also consider whitelisting on the content filter section too.
